Welcome to the IRC Usage guide. This serves as a guide to help people new to IRC to register a nickname and document a few useful, but often unused, commands. ***** Registration with NickServ ***** NickServ is a service bot which allows registration and reservations of nicknames on the IRC network. NickServ can allow you to regain control of a nick you owned being used by someone else, by simply providing your password. NickServ also allows you to gain access to ChanServ, which allows for powerful access control, channel protection, and control over channels. Registration with NickServ is simple. All you need is one command: /msg NickServ@services.int REGISTER password email@address (Note: the @services.int part is purely optional, and does not need to be specified. It does add security in the event NickServ splits from the network and someone impersonates it.) (Note 2: Some clients will pass on commands like /nickserv or /ns in place of the relatively long /msg NickServ command.) Once you have registered, you will be sent a confirmation email. Fill out the instructions there, and your nickname will be yours to keep!* * Unverified accoutns are dropped after 24 hours. Verified acounts are dropped after 30 days of no activity. Vacation mode can extend that to 90 days. Accounts may also be removed by RFC1337 staff should the TOS be violated. Once you have registered, each time you connect to the network, you will need to identify. Again, it is a good idea to add @services.int to the /msg command (or use the /ns command if your client supports it) Send /msg NickServ@services.int IDENTIFY accountname password Account name is optional, and allows you to identify to an account without being on a nick grouped to it. Identification is required to use the nick (by default) and to gain access to channels. Once you have registered, you may want to read through NickServ's online docs. Type /msg NickServ HELP on IRC for more information. ***** NickServ Account Grouping ***** NickServ includes the ability to group multiple nicknames to an account. This allows a user to maintain multiple nicks, and still have channel access across the nicknames. The process to set up grouping is outlinded below. 1. Ensure you are identified to the account you wish to add a nick to. 2. Change nick to the new name you wish to add to the account. 3. Enter the command: /msg NickServ GROUP It's almost too easy! ***** Sending and Receiving Memos ***** IRC has no way of sending messages to offline users by itself. That is why there is a MemoServ bot! MemoServ allows users to send short messages to other users - even offline ones /msg MemoServ HELP ***** For Everything Else ***** Join #RFC1337 and ask any questions you may have.
